December meeting: Holiday Potluck & Report Back from Healthcare NOW Strategy Meeting

In addition to celebrating the last year of organizing at our annual holiday potluck, Ann Murray and Mark Piotrowski will give a report about their experiences at the Healthcare NOW strategy meeting last month in Chicago.

October Labor Party meeting to feature screening of "Recount: The Story of the 2000 Presidential Election."

Since the October Labor Party meeting is 1 week before the pivotal 2008 Presidential election we will be showing HBO's drama, Recount: The Story of the 2000 Presidential Election

IMDB calls the Emmy-winning Recount, "a chronicle of the weeks after the 2000 U.S. presidential election and the subsequent recounts in Florida."

Central Labor Council Labor Day Breakfast, Saturday, August 30

Join unionists and friends of the Labor Movement on Saturday, August 30 for the annual North Central Florida Central Labor Council (AFL-CIO) LABOR DAY Breakfast. The breakfast will be at 8:30 a.m. at the Carpenters Union Hall, 1910 NW 53rd Avenue, Gainesville, FL. The event is free and open to the public but a donation of 2 canned goods is requested.

"Who's Afraid of Health Insurance Companies?": Labor Party Signature Ad a Big Succes; Ad to Run Sunday, August 24

The Alachua County Labor Party collected over 275 names for the signature ad in the Gainesville Sun calling on Senators Obama and McCain to "be bold" and to "stand with the American people" by supporting H.R. 676 — the National Health Insurance Act.

The ad will run in the Sunday, August 24 edition of the Gainesville Sun, coinciding with the start of the Democratic National Convention.

"Health Care for America Now": Which Side Are They On?

Alachua County Labor Party co-chair Jenny Brown wrote a critique of the new national coalition "Health Care for America Now" and their failure to support single-payer, national health insurance while using the rhetoric of the single-payer movement. The article first appeared in The Gainesville Iguana.

This new group should not be confused with the six-year-old Healthcare-NOW! coalition which is working at the grassroots for H.R. 676 and of which the ACLP is a proud, longstanding member. ACLP co-chair Mark Piotrowski also serves on the Heatlcare-NOW Board of Directors.

June 19: National Day of Action Against Insurance Companies (Local event in Jacksonville)

In solidarity with the large demonstrations being planned in San Francisco against the America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) convention, groups around the country will be holding demonstrations outside insurance companies demanding H.R. 676, single-payer national health insurance. The ACLP is participating in this National Day of Action.

The ACLP has been working with unionists in Jacksonville, FL and will be holding a protest outside of BlueCross/BlueShield there.

ACLP launches signature ad calling on candidates to stand with the American people, support national health care for all!

"Who's afraid of health insurance companies?" is the title of the signature ad now being circulated by members of the Alachua County Labor Party in support of H.R. 676.

It is $5-10 sliding scale for individuals and $25-50 for groups to sign the ad.

The ad, which will run in conjunction with the national conventions later this year, ends with a challenge for all candidates:

"We the undersigned call on all the candidates to BE BOLD. Stand with the people of the U.S. and stand up to the health insurance companies. We call on Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (as well as Senator McCain and Florida Senators Nelson and Martinez) to introduce a companion bill to HR 676 in the Senate, and to vote and work for HR 676: “Expanded and Improved Medicare for All.”
